A Loving Mother And A Dedicated Teacher. But Today She Is Fighting End-Stage Kidney Failure, Seeking Help Desperately

“For me, my daughters and my students are everything. I have always taught them to face any difficulty, either related to study or life, with courage. But today, it is me who is living the lesson, as I fight the toughest battle of my life – after losing both my kidneys and waiting for support to get Kidney Transplant.” -  Deepti Agrawal

Initially She Found Out She Had Pneumonia

Deepti Agrawal is a forty-two-year-old Maths Teacher from Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. She lives with her husband and her two daughters. Be it home or school, Deepti has always been the leader, inspiring everyone around her. Her family depends on her not only financially, but emotionally too. And her students adore her as the guiding angel who would help them solve their Maths and every other problem. But then everything began to change during last summer, when Deepti started getting cold and cough which was not going away.

Deepti says, “I tried everything in my control, but nothing worked. After few days my condition got worse. I was extremely weak and started getting fever. When I realised that it would not go away by itself, I went to a doctor. It was after seeing the doctor, I came to know I had pneumonia, and I was hospitalised.”

Both Her Kidneys Got Damaged

Although at hospital the doctor extracted the cough from lungs, but Deepti’s condition was not improving at all. Rather her condition worsened to the extent that she was not able to eat anything. She had vomiting and loose motions, and her weight came down to 30 kilos. The doctors did all kinds of tests, and finally the biopsy of kidney revealed that both her kidneys were damaged.

Recalling the day Deepti says, “Although I was desperate to know the cause of my condition, but never in my distant dream I had thought that this could happen to me. The doctors put me to immediate dialysis, and we thought that this could be the only struggle we had to face.”

She Started Bleeding Through Urine

But for Deepti and her family, the struggle did not end there. After getting released, very often she would have complications with restlessness, extreme weakness and difficulty in breathing. Hence in a span of two months she was hospitalised for 2-3 times. But her condition did not improve, and eventually she started bleeding through urine.

Deepti narrates, “My condition was so bad, that even after dialysis, I was not able to stand. In the meantime, multiple hospitalisation and dialysis drained away all our savings, and it came to the point that we sold everything we had, including our land and jewellery.”

She Can Only Be Saved Through Kidney Transplant Which Will Cost More Than Fifteen Lakhs

When things did not improve after so much of effort, Deepti and her husband came to Kolkata with a hope to find a better treatment. At Kolkata, the doctors found out that Deepti had water accumulation, which was damaging her other organs. The doctors had extracted 18 L of water from her body, but even then, when her bleeding through urine did not stop, they took out both the infected kidneys. The process has temporarily brought the symptoms under control. But Deepti needs immediate Kidney Transplant, as without kidney her risk of survival is increasing day by day.

Holding her tears, Deepti says, "The doctors indeed has given me hope. But the cost to carry out Kidney Transplant will be around fifteen and half lakhs, which is way beyond we can afford. In addition to that, after I fell sick, neither my husband nor me were able to work. Thus, our regular source of income also has got paused. But I have to fight for my children and my husband. Please help me and allow me a chance to live for my daughters."
